Abstract

This study examines the motif of "shem' u pervane" (the candle and the moth), a prominent theme in Eastern and Classical Turkish literature as well as Sufi thought, through th e Divan of the 17th-century Ottoman poet Sheikh-ul-Islam Yahya. Drawing upon previous academic works on Persian Shem' u Pervane mathnawis and the works of poets such as Yunus Emre, Fuzuli, Baki, Nef'i, and Nedim, the author underscores the deep-rooted significance of this motif. Known for his fluent style, urban Turkish diction, and lyrical elegance as an Istanbul poet, Sheikh-ul-Islam Yahya frequently employed the concepts of candle and moth both individually and within compound terms or end-rhymes (redif). The text presents an alphabetical compilation of couplets and two specific ghazals centered on this theme, alongside their intra-lingual Turkish translations.
