Abstract

Bernard Lewis, known for his studies on Islam, makes important observations in this work regarding the field of Islamic history over a period of approximately eight centuries. We will try to focus more on theological/theological observations. He has composed his book in three parts and fourteen chapters: 1. The Four Caliphs and the Umayyad Caliphate, 2. The Abbasids, 3. Syria, Egypt, North Africa, 4. Iran and the East, 5. The Mongols, 6. After the Mongols, 7. Muslim Spain, 8. The rise of the Ottomans, 9. Religion and sovereignty, 10. The Iranian state administration, 11. Administration, 12. Jihad, 13. War and 14. Conquests. The subject of this book is Islamic history from the advent of the Prophet Muhammad to the conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. According to the author, classical Islamic civilization has found expression in three main languages, the first of which is Arabic. The Prophet Muhammad was born, lived and died among the Arabs of the Hijaz. His holy book was also written in their language. Another is that the Persians, who both preserved the memories of the great empires of recent history and were aware of their immense contribution to Islamic civilization, revived and reasserted their own unique identity. According to Lewis, the Persian renaissance corresponds to a kind of interim period between the decline of the Arabs and the rise of the Turks. Medieval Islamic history begins with the influx of Arab invaders into the Middle East and ends with the victory of another new group, the steppe peoples of the north. After accepting Islam, the Turks established a dominance that would last for a thousand years; they created new models of government and society, and made Turkish the third main language of Islamic civilization.

Özet

İslam’a dair çalışmalarıyla bilinen Bernard Lewis bu eserinde yaklaşık sekiz yüzyıllık süreçte İslam tarihi alanıyla ilgili önemli tespitlerde bulunmaktadır. Biz daha ziyade kelâmi/teolojik tespitlere odaklanmaya çalışacağız. Kitabını üç kısım ve on dört bölümden oluşturmuştur: 1. Dört halife ve Emevi halifeliği, 2. Abbasiler, 3. Suriye, Mısır, Kuzey Afrika, 4. İran ve doğu, 5. Moğollar, 6. Moğolların ardından, 7. Müslüman İspanya, 8. Osmanlıların yükselişi, 9. Din ve egemenlik, 10. İran devlet idaresi, 11. İdare, 12. Cihat, 13. Savaş ve 14. Fetihler. Bu kitabın konusu Hz. Muhammed’in gelişinden İstanbul’un Fatih Sultan Mehmet tarafından fethine dek İslam tarihidir.
