Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the incidence of pressure injuries in patients placed in the prone position in the intensive care unit of a public hospital. Method: Thirty-one patients who were admitted to the intensive care unit of a public hospital between January 2021 and December 2023 and who were placed in the prone position were included in the study. The study was conducted using a retrospective descriptive design. Findings: The mean age of the 31 patients was 65.03±11.16, 58.1% were male, and their BMI was 28.21±2.04. It was determined that 74% of patients were admitted due to respiratory system diseases, 71% had one chronic disease, and 12.9% had more than one chronic disease. Hypertension was determined in 45.2% of patients. The daily prone position duration of the patients was 17.41±6.07 hours, pressure injuries related to the prone position appeared in 2.23±1.35 days, and 32.3% of the patients remained in the prone position for 3 days. It was determined that pressure injuries occurred in the knee area in 22.6% of patients and in the forehead area in 22.6% of patients with pressure injuries. Pressure injuries developed in 45.16% of patients (n=14), and stage 2 pressure injuries were observed in 54.8% of patients who developed pressure injuries. A statistically significant difference was found between the occurrence of pressure injuries and the day of pressure injury development. No significant difference was found between the development of pressure injury and age, gender, chronic disease status, BMI, and duration of prone positioning. Conclusion: This study determined that the duration of prone positioning affects the development of pressure injuries; however, age, gender, chronic disease status, and body mass index do not affect pressure injuries. Careful attention should be paid when applying prone positioning, and regular monitoring of patients for pressure ulcer risk is recommended.
