Abstract

This study approaches digital labor exploitation within the context of viral advertising from a political economy perspective and critically examines the fundamental mechanisms of exploitation in digital capitalism—namely, coercion, expropriation, and alienation. Drawing on Christian Fuchs’s theory of digital labor, the research discusses how viral advertisements integrate users into the digital capitalist system unconsciously, incorporating their unpaid labor into the production of economic value through commodification. This literature-based study examines the processes of commodification and exploitation of user labor within the capitalist digital economy. Digital platforms transform users into productive labor sources under the guise of offering “free” services, thereby deepening exploitation through viral advertising strategies. Users are reduced to a “prosumer” status via tactics such as emotional manipulation, hyperreality, and the illusion of voluntary participation; their attention, time, and emotions are commodified into economic value. However, while users contribute to the circulation of advertisements by sharing content, they simultaneously lose control over their own labor, facilitating the reproduction of digital capitalism. This study demonstrates that viral advertising is not merely a marketing strategy but constitutes a key element of an economic model in which user labor is systematically exploited. Aiming to foster critical awareness of digital labor exploitation, the research makes an original contribution to the literature by analyzing the structural issues arising from viral advertising in terms of media ethics, user autonomy, and economic inequality.
