Abstract

Improving the quality of labor, and increasing the knowledge, skills and abilities of individuals gives rise to a development in the productivity of the economy and thus more output. This study analyses the impact of enrolment rates at different stages such as primary education, secondary education, and tertiary education on the Gross Domestic Product per worker in Turkey between 1994 and 2022 using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model method. The findings reveal that increases in the enrolment rate at the secondary level have the highest impact on GDP per capita. It also shows that increases in primary and tertiary enrolment rates have a positive impact on GDP per capita. The evidence of the study shows that, in accordance with the endogenous models, greater investment in human capital, especially through higher levels of education, support human capital to develop permanently and positively impact on long-term growth in Turkey. The government's development of an education policy aimed at increasing or at least maintaining enrolment rates at all levels and allocating more budget to the education sector will contribute to increased economic growth.
