Abstract

Introduction: Trichomegaly is a term describing the excessive growth of eyelashes and eyebrows. Possible causes include the use of topical or systemic medication or an exceptionally high level of androgenic sex hormones. The Case Report: An eye examination of the 79-yearold- man showed that he had grade 2 nuclear cataract and bilateral 0,5 of the best corrected visual acuity. Eyeglasses were prescribed. Follow-up appointment was scheduled for 6 months later. At 6th months examination, an excessive growth of eyelashes resulting visual restriction was noted. Hypertrichosis was observed around the eyes and it was evident his eyebrows required continuous grooming. His past medical history revealed a diagnosis for non-small cell lung cancer 5 months previously and Tarceva (Erlotinib) was administered. Androgenic sex hormone levels were found to be normal. The best corrected visual acuity was measured to be 0,15 and 0,4 in the right and left eye, respectively. Cataract surgery was planned for the right eye. The eyelashes were shortened because the patient felt discomfort due to the excessive growth. Excessive growth of eyelashes and eyebrows was considered to have resulted from Erlotinib treatment as a side effect. Conclusion: Chemotherapeutic agents such as Erlotinib can extend patient’s chance of survival. However, some side effects negatively impacting life standarts might be encountered.
