Abstract
Falling back upon the Aḥādīth and Sunnah of the Prophet (p.b.u.H.), this article examines, within a holistic framework, the principles of satr (concealment/discretion) and kitmān (secrecy), which constitute fundamental pillars of Islamic ethical and legal systems. By analyzing Quranic foundations in conjunction with Ḥadīth literature, the study identifies four primary dimensions of privacy: the individual’s responsibility to conceal their own sins and shortcomings; the duty of confidentiality in familial and social relations along with the prohibition of tajassus (spying); the principle of anonymous admonition and the discouragement of sin confession within the spheres of administration and moral guidance; and finally, kitmān and strategic secrecy in the political-military domain. In this context, it is demonstrated that the ethics of satr is not merely an individual virtue, but rather a proactive protective mechanism operating across legal, social, and political spheres. This study distinguishes itself from existing literature by systematically synthesizing classical Ḥadīth commentaries and jurisprudential (fiqh) discourses—specifically those regarding the disclosure of sin, the covering of faults, the prohibition of spying, and the maxim of "war is deceit"—while bridging this traditional scholarship with the "culture of disclosure" and the privacy crises prevalent in the digital age. Consequently, the article reveals that the ethics of Satr/Concealment (the non-disclosure of faults) provides a comprehensive ethical framework that safeguards individual repentance and sincerity, social cohesion, familial privacy, and the enduring security of the state.
