Abstract
The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of using creative drama as a teaching method on 3rd-grade students’ academic achievement and learning retention in the “Division with Natural Numbers” unit. The research employed a “quasi-experimental pretest- posttest control group design” a quantitative research methodology. The study group consisted of 42 third-grade students attending a private school in Ankara during the 2021-2022 academic year. In the experimental group, division was taught using the Creative Drama Lesson Plans developed by the researcher, while the control group received instruction through the expository teaching method. The intervention lasted for a total of 16 hours. Data were collected using the “Division Achievement Test” developed by the researcher and analyzed via SPSS. To measure knowledge retention, the test was administered as Retention Test I five weeks after the posttest, and as Retention Test II seven months and one week later. The results showed that the experimental and control groups had equivalent achievement levels before the intervention, both groups demonstrated a significant increase in academic achievement afterward, and while no significant between-group difference was found in posttest and Retention Test I scores, a significant difference favoring the experimental group emerged in Retention Test II scores. The results suggest that the creative drama method is more effective than the expository teaching method in ensuring long-term retention. Based on the findings, several educational recommendations have been developed.
