Abstract

Science education provided in early childhood should be planned in accordance with children’s interests and needs in order to foster positive attitudes toward science and support the acquisition of scientifically accurate concepts. In this process, teachers’ attitudes toward science, their content knowledge, and their classroom practices play a crucial role. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine preschool teachers’ attitudes toward science, their levels of science content knowledge, and their classroom science practices. Using a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 150 preschool teachers in İstanbul through the Early Childhood Teachers’ Attitudes toward Science Scale, the Survey of Science Practices and Achievement Test on Scientific Concepts. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and analysis of variance. The findings indicated that while teachers generally held positive attitudes toward science education, 42% of them demonstrated low levels of science content knowledge. In addition, teachers predominantly relied on internet-based resources for science-related information, implemented science activities mostly once a week, and focused primarily on life sciences as well as earth and space sciences in their classroom practices. The results revealed that science activities were largely associated with cognitive developmental outcomes and that experimental and observational methods were most frequently used, whereas instructional strategies that actively engage children were employed to a limited extent.
