Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid and reliable Environmental Literacy Scale to assess middle school students’ perceptions of environmental literacy. During the scale development process, national and international literature on environmental literacy was reviewed, and an item pool representing the dimensions of knowledge, disposition, competence, and environmentally responsible behaviour was developed. The 67-item trial form, revised in line with expert opinions, was administered to middle school students. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted with data from 313 students, while confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was carried out with a separate sample of 295 students. As a result of the EFA, a structure consisting of 26 items and four dimensions was obtained, explaining 50.01% of the total variance. The CFA findings showed that the model was acceptable and had good fit indices. The reliability coefficient for the overall scale was .91. The findings indicate that the developed scale is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing middle school students’ perceptions of environmental literacy. It is considered that the scale can serve as a functional data-collection tool for evaluating environmental education practices, monitoring students’ environmental literacy levels, and informing future research.
