Abstract

This paper examines the dynamic relationship between unemployment and economic development, using Georgia as a case study. The primary objective of the study is to identify the mechanisms through which the unemployment rate influences macroeconomic indicators and to determine its role in the process of economic growth. Unemployment is considered not merely as a dysfunction of the labor market, but as a multidimensional socio-economic challenge that affects income distribution, social welfare, and the overall quality of economic development. A high level of unemployment often signals underlying economic difficulties, while its consequences extend beyond the labor market and have wide-ranging implications. Based on an analysis of Georgia’s experience, the study aims to reveal the multifaceted impact of unemployment on various aspects of economic growth. The research is grounded in a quantitative methodology and utilizes official statistical data. Through statistical evaluation and regression analysis, the paper explores causal relationships between unemployment levels and key economic indicators. It examines how unemployment affects factors such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, income inequality, social protection programs, and overall societal well-being. Furthermore, the study analyzes policy measures implemented in Georgia aimed at reducing unemployment and promoting sustainable economic development. The effectiveness of these policies is assessed, identifying both achievements and areas requiring improvement. In addition, the paper evaluates labor market policies in Georgia in terms of their efficiency in reducing unemployment and fostering sustainable economic growth. The findings highlight the necessity of structural reforms, particularly in improving the alignment between the education system and labor market demands. The conclusions drawn from the analysis contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between unemployment and economic development and provide a practically valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders both in Georgia and in other regions facing similar challenges. At the global level, as countries navigate the complex dynamics of labor markets and economic well-being, the case of Georgia serves as an important model, emphasizing the critical role of addressing unemployment as a key component of national economic growth strategies.
