Abstract
In the post-colonial period in the Middle East, the rise of political Islamist movements and anti-Western reactions have been exploited by radical groups and directed toward violence. Although the United States played a significant role in the rise and militarization of political Islam by supporting Salafi groups against the expansionism of the Soviet Union and the Iranian Islamic Revolution, its securitization of Islamic identity, especially in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, has led the Western world to perceive Islamic values as the source of terrorism. The aim of this study is to examine the phenomenon of so-called “Islamic terrorism”, which has emerged as a result of radical groups’ exploitation of Islamic identity and has been constructed through discourse within the West's securitization policies, within the framework of the evolution of terrorism, the dynamics of violence in the Middle East throughout history, and securitization theory. In this context, the study examines how Islamic identity has become trapped between the exploitation of radicalism through the rhetoric of jihad in the East and the securitization policy constructed by the United States in the West on the basis of theoretical frameworks such as fourth-wave terrorism and new terrorism. It is understood that the terrorist acts and hard-power policies arising from this so-called clash of civilizations, which mutually reinforce one another, have led to a vicious cycle of violence.
