Abstract

This study aims to comparatively analyze the crisis of masculinity and its intersection with Sufi epistemology in the contemporary Turkish novel, focusing on İhsan Oktay Anar’s Amat and Mustafa Kutlu’s Uzun Hikâye. Methodologically grounded in the text-oriented synthesis of critical masculinity theories (hegemony) and Sufi concepts (Jalal-Jamal, Qabd-Bast, Nafs al-Ammara), the research explores the male subject’s oscillation between power and nothingness. The findings reveal that the galleon in Amat functions as a closed space of destruction where the Nafs al-Ammara (commanding self) and the attribute of Jalal (Wrath) drown hegemonic domination, dragging the male into absolute death (Mat). In contrast, Uzun Hikâye exhibits the manifestation of Jamal (Grace) and the ethics of futuwwa through a horizontal, nomadic dervishhood that actively rejects dominion. In brief, the study concludes that the hubristic lust for domination objectifies and annihilates the male within his own crisis of power; conversely, the voluntary renunciation of power (Faqr/Fana) elevates him to a dignified existence. As worldly patriarchal power proves impossible, the ideal of the “Perfect Man” re-emerges as both a destructive and constructive pole in literature.

Özet

Çağdaş Türk romanında erkeklik krizinin tasavvufi epistemolojiyle kesiştiği karanlık ve aydınlık dehlizleri haritalandırmayı amaçlayan bu çalışma, İhsan Oktay Anar’ın Amat ve Mustafa Kutlu’nun Uzun Hikâye eserlerini karşılaştırmalı olarak inceler. Araştırmanın metodolojik zeminini, eleştirel erkeklik teorileri (hegemonya) ile tasavvufi kavramların (Celâl-Cemâl, Kabz-Bast, Nefs-i Emmare) sentezlenerek metin odaklı analiz edilmesi oluşturur.
