Abstract
While the use of space in Turkish novels is mostly handled at the level of a thematic background or a décor, in Abbas Sayar's novel Yılkı Atı, geographical elements are seen as an element that directly determines the structure and theme of the narrative. This study explains the inability of the Dorukısrak in the novel to return to the village with the concepts of "Geographical locking" or "Geographical impossibility" revealed by the conditions of physical geography. In the study, the disciplines of literature and geography were brought together, and an interdisciplinary perspective was exhibited. In addition to the distinctions and concepts of "space" and "place" of human geography theorists such as Tuan, Relph and Bachelard, Genette's narratological analysis methods were used in an integrated manner in the study. Within the scope of the research, geographical barriers in the novel; it is categorized as climatic, seasonal, topographic, hydrographic, biological and human. In addition, the differences between the mappable "real geography" and the "narrative geography" that marks the functional transformation in the novel are revealed and the transformative effect of space on the characters is analyzed. As a result of the examinations, it has been determined that snow, blizzard and predatory elements break the spatial continuity and make return impossible at both physical and perceptual levels. The functional transformation of space has dispelled the perception of safe "home", turning the village into a space of rejection and the wilderness into a new habitat. As a result, this study reveals that geography is a dominant factor that directs the narrative, locks the narrative fiction and determines the fates of the characters in the novel Yılkı Atı, rather than being a passive scene.
