Abstract
Cevdet Kudret’s trilogy Süleyman'ın Dünyası (Süleyman’s World)—comprising Sınıf Arkadaşları (Classmates), There is Havada Bulut Yok (No Cloud in the Sky), and Karıncayı Tanırsınız (You Know the Ant)—is an autobiographical series rooted in the author's own life experiences. Bearing the real name Süleyman Cevdet, the author mirrors his personal identity through the protagonist while capturing the broader social landscape between the First and Second World Wars. This study evaluates the series through Philippe Lejeune’s “autobiographical pact” and Georg Lukács’s concept of “typicality.” The initial sections of the study scrutinize the relationship between reality and the art of the novel. Next, traces of Cevdet Kudret’s real life are tracked, ranging from the protagonist bearing his name to his family’s tribulations. This exploration is conducted through a careful analysis of the author’s memoirs, letters, interviews, essays, and the secondary literature written about him in relation to major social developments. The resulting identities and correspondences are thus evaluated using Lejeune and Lukács’s theoretical frameworks. Consequently, it is observed that when analyzed through Lejeune’s framework, Kudret’s trilogy functions as an autobiographical work that sheds light on his personal life; whereas, through Lukacs’s perspective, it acquires the status of a socialist-realist document that illuminates the social life of the period through the “types” it portrays.
Özet
Cevdet Kudret’in Süleyman’ın Dünyası adlı nehir romanı Sınıf Arkadaşları, Havada Bulut Yok ve Karıncayı Tanırsınız adlı üç kitaptan oluşur. Yazar romanları gerçek yaşamındaki gözlemlerinden yola çıkarak kaleme aldığını belirtir. Bu sebeple asıl adı Süleyman Cevdet olan yazarının hayatından izler taşıyan Süleyman’ın Dünyası, otobiyografik roman serisidir, denilebilir. Romanlar sadece Cevdet Kudret’in yaşamından izler taşımakla kalmaz, I. ve II. dünya savaşlarının yaşandığı dönemlerin toplumsal hayatına da ışık tutar. Bu çalışmada, Cevdet Kudret’in adı geçen romanları Philippe Lejeune’ün “otobiyografik sözleşme” ve George Lukacs’ın “Tipiklik” kuramları ışığında değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın ilk bölümlerinde gerçeklik ve roman sanatı arasındaki ilişki irdelenmiştir. Ardından metin analizi yöntemiyle Cevdet Kudret’in romanlarının başkahramanına kendi adını vermesinden başlamak üzere ailesinin başına gelenler, bazı önemli toplumsal olaylar ışığında yazarın anıları, mektupları, söyleşileri, hakkında yazılanlar ve denemeleri dikkate alınarak onun gerçek yaşamından izler sürülmüş, elde edilen aynîlikler ve benzerlikler Lejune ve Lukacs’ın bakış açılarıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Buna göre Cevdet Kudret’in üç romanının Lejune’ün penceresinden bakıldığında şahsi hayatına ışık tutan otobiyografik bir eser niteliği kazanırken; Lukacs’ın penceresinden bakıldığında ise Süleyman’ın toplumsal bir “tip”i temsile dönüştüğü ve romandaki diğer kahramanların birer “tip”i temsil ettiği belirlenmiştir. Böylece romanın, dönemin toplum hayatına ışık tutan toplumcu ve gerçekçi bir belge niteliği kazandığı tespit edilmiştir.
