Abstract

This study examines, from a Marxist criminological perspective, how crime is portrayed in O. Henry’s short story The Cop and the Anthem as a structural consequence of the capitalist inequalities, class exclusion and mechanisms of poverty produced by capitalist society. Within this framework, the aim of the study is to analyze how crime and punishment are represented in O’Henry’s story, focusing on character portrayals and spatial arrangements from a Marxist criminology perspective, and to render visible the structural dimensions of crime through a literary narrative. The research is based on a critical textual analysis conducted within the scope of qualitative research methods. In the analysis, the process through which the central character, Soapy, turns to crime amid poverty, social exclusion, and a struggle for survival is evaluated in relation to class inequalities and the functioning of the state’s legal system. The findings show that Soapy’s attempts at crime do not stem from individual moral weakness, but rather from class inequalities and structural dynamics produced by capitalist society. By bringing together literary analysis with critical and Marxist criminology literature within a sociological framework, the study aims to offer an interdisciplinary contribution.
