Abstract

The increasing frequency and intensity of forest fires significantly affect not only natural ecosystems but also the surrounding agricultural production systems. In the post-fire period, physical and biochemical degradation in the soil reduces cereal productivity and necessitates the use of additional inputs in the production process. This situation leads to a marked increase in the carbon footprint, particularly in cereals cultivated over large areas such as wheat and barley, due to intensified fuel consumption, nitrogen fertilization, and intensive soil tillage practices. In this study, the indirect impacts of wildfire-induced terrestrial carbon emissions on cereal agriculture are examined through an interdisciplinary perspective. Supported by literature-based analyses and case studies, post-fire carbon mitigation strategies are evaluated. Additionally, solution-oriented approaches such as the integration of precision agriculture technologies, minimum tillage, and carbon offset mechanisms are presented. Accordingly, this research provides a guiding framework for policymakers and researchers, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding of the fire–agriculture–carbon nexus. The findings highlight the necessity of re-structuring agricultural planning as a crucial component in the fight against climate change.
