Abstract

This study examines the transferability of the technical and operational capabilities developed in Türkiye’s defense industry in unmanned aerial vehicle technologies to commercial drone logistics through a qualitative research approach. It evaluates the conditions under which capabilities such as autonomous flight, communication systems, sensor technologies, endurance, route planning, and payload management can be adapted to commercial drone transportation. Data were collected from 15 participants with relevant knowledge through a semi-structured written interview form and analyzed using content analysis in MAXQDA. Six main themes emerged: technological and operational integration, effects on logistics operations, disaster logistics and emergency response capacity, legal regulations, security and social acceptance, technological capacity and competitive advantage, and sustainability and environmental impacts. The findings indicate that Türkiye’s technical experience provides an important initial advantage for commercial drone logistics. However, commercial application requires the coordinated development of regulations, certification, safe take-off and landing infrastructure, battery management, maintenance networks, data security, social acceptance, and operational integration. The study concludes that, in the short term, commercial drone logistics is more likely to develop as a complementary and hybrid solution for last-mile delivery, disaster logistics, rural access, healthcare logistics, and low-volume urgent shipments than to replace conventional transportation systems.
