Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the level of nursing students' assessment of pain in pediatric patients and the factors affecting it. Materials and Method: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted between June and August 2023 with 145 undergraduate nursing students at a foundation university in Ankara. "Personal Information Form", "Pain Catastrophisation Scale", and "Pediatric Pain Management Knowledge Scale for Nursing Students" were used. Data were analyzed using an Independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation. Results: The mean score of the Pediatric Pain Management Scale of nursing students was 77.66±27.58, and it was found that their knowledge of Pediatric Pain Management was at an intermediate level. There was a low positive correlation between the mean scores of pain catastrophisation and the pediatric pain management scale (r=0.184, p=0.02). Nursing students' grades (F=4.67, p=0.01), gender (t=-2.60, p=0.01; t=-2.13, p=0.03) and having chronic disease (t=2.09, p=0.03; t=2.25, p=0.02) were found to be related to their knowledge of pediatric pain management. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of intervention studies to increase nursing students' knowledge by determining the risk factors that may lead to inadequacy in pediatric pain management knowledge.
