Abstract

Star formation in early-type galaxies is generally thought to occur at low levels. However, the presence of gas and other star-forming materials in these galaxies indicates that star formation may persist, even if at slower rate. In this study, the star formation history and processes of NGC 680, one of the nearby early-type and HI rich galaxies included in the ATLAS3D project, was analyzed. The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the galaxy was modeled using mid- and far-infrared photometric data obtained from the AKARI and WISE telescopes. Additionally, the effectiveness of the automated SED modeling algorithm used in this study was evaluated and compared with a manually conducted modeling method. As a result of the modeling, the overall star formation rate of NGC 680 was calculated as $(1.20\pm1.82)\times10^{−14}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. Star formation increased in the last 100 million years but decreased significantly in the last 10 million years. The results have been calculated as recent star formation rates over the specified time intervals. Therefore, these findings are specific to NGC~680 and should not be generalized to early-type galaxies as a whole. However, broader conclusions about the evolution of star formation processes in early-type galaxies could be drawn through the analysis of a larger galaxy sample.
