Abstract

Stellar shells are low surface brightness structures that appear as concentric arcs around galaxies and are formed during galaxy mergers. Shells are aligned with the main axis of the galaxy and expand away from the centre after they form. Therefore, the outermost shell is used to estimate the start of merger time. This estimated time is considered the lower limit for the merger of galaxies. However, the visibility and radii of the shells vary depending on the line of sight of the galaxy. The fact that galaxies can only be observed from one line of sight makes an accurate understanding of such structures difficult; therefore, analyses of different lines of sight can only be performed with cosmological simulations. Using the Illustris TNG50 cosmological simulation, the dependence of the shell radii on the projection of the galaxy relative to the observer was studied. In the simulation, nine different lines of sight were determined for a galaxy and the farthest shell distance in each direction was measured. These measurements were analysed to evaluate the effects of the line of sight on the outermost shell distance. The study reveals how the shell distribution varies with the line of sight.
