Abstract

This study aims to examine the most significant pragmatic concepts as manifested in the Arab intellectual heritage, particularly within the disciplines of rhetoric, usūl al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), grammar, and other related fields. It then seeks to compare these concepts with the findings of contemporary Western linguists within the frameworks of Speech Act Theory, Relevance Theory, and dialogic interaction. The research demonstrates that the Arab heritage established, at an early stage, well-founded pragmatic notions such as consideration of the requirements of context (muqtadā al-ḥāl), communicative intentions, and the situational context of discourse. In contrast, Western scholarship has focused on constructing systematic analytical theories grounded in analytic philosophy and modern linguistics. The study concludes that integrating these two approaches through a critical perspective would enrich contemporary pragmatic studies and further develop discourse analysis tools, particularly in the fields of religious, media, and literary discourse.
