Abstract

Background: The medical use of mushrooms has a very long tradition in Asia and is nowadays becoming more accepted in the West. It is reported that the extracts or isolated constituents from macrofungi have biological activities such as antimicrobial, anti-viral, anti-tumour, anti-allergic, immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, antiatherogenic, hypoglycaemic and hepatoprotective activities. Objective: In this study, cytotoxic activity of ethanol extracts (EE) and methanol (ME) of Clitocybe geotropa on MDA-MB-231 cell line were investigated. Method: The yield of mushroom extracts was calculated for EE and ME 30.6% and 28.2%, respectively. Cytotoxic effects of the extracts were determined by Trypan Blue assay. Results: The total phenolic contents of EE and ME were 217.15±0.02, 138.39±0.01; total flavonoid contents 152.28±0.03, 111.95±0.02 mgCE/g, respectively. The ME of mushroom’s 50–400 µg/mL concentrations did not show any cytotoxic effect in MDA-MB-231 cell line while the EE of C. geotropa % 51,5; 400 μg/ml, % 17,9; 200 μg/ml, % 6,6; 100 μg/ml had cytotoxicity. Conclusion: The mushroom, Clitocybe geotropa, could be used as a potential anticancer agent for MDA-MB- 231 cell line.
