Abstract

To truly comprehend Mevlânâ and his seminal work, the Masnavî, one must first unravel the sufi spirit and layered meanings embedded in its terminology. Any attempt to interpret the Masnavî must consider the semantic weight of its vocabulary within the framework of Mevlânâ’s spiritual worldview and the broader sufi tradition. His words are not merely linguistic expressions; they reflect a profound mystical experience and a rich cultural heritage. The terminology of the Masnavî is woven with symbols and layered structures, whose proper understanding requires familiarity with the religious, cultural, and social contexts in which these concepts are rooted. Accordingly, the Masnavî has been reinterpreted across eras to meet the evolving needs of its readers. This article focuses on the 27th couplet of Mevlânâ’s Masnavî, as part of a broader study that compiles various scholarly commentaries on couplets 19 through 34. Within this context, it becomes evident that Mevlânâ refrains from expressing certain truths about divine love due to the absence of a suitable interlocutor. In the 27th couplet, he articulates the condition for breaking his silence: just as the reed (ney) only produces sound when it meets the lips of the reed-player (neyzen), so too will he speak when he is near his spiritual companion. Through this metaphor, the couplet conveys the notion that the secrets of love -entrusted to God’s intimate servants- must be disclosed only to those who are worthy.
