Abstract

In the classical commentary tradition, Qur’anic verses and hadiths are among the important sources employed to explain the source text and substantiate the commentator’s interpretations. Hülâsatü’ş-Şürûh fî Nihâyeti’l-Vuzûh, written by Mehmed Murad, a nineteenth-century commentator on the Mathnawī, is likewise a commentary in which these sources are extensively used. This study examines how quotations from Qur’anic verses and hadiths are employed in the fifth volume of the work and the functions they assume within the commentary. To this end, the relationship between these quotations and the couplets is first taken into consideration. Quotations occurring directly in the couplets are distinguished from those introduced into the commentary by Mehmed Murad either on the basis of an expression or meaning in the couplet or without any direct correspondence in the couplet. Selected examples are then evaluated in terms of substantiation, explanation, and Sufi interpretation. The analysis demonstrates that Mehmed Murad employs Qur’anic verses and hadiths not only to substantiate ideas expressed in the couplets or his own interpretations, but also to explain concepts, similes, and allusions in the couplets and to develop Sufi interpretations. It is therefore concluded that quotations from Qur’anic verses and hadiths constitute one of the elements that reveal Mehmed Murad’s approach to explaining and interpreting the Mathnawī in Hülâsatü’ş-Şürûh.
