Abstract
Venus (Zühre), one of the seven planets in the sky, has been regarded as the musician of the heavens in traditional cosmological beliefs. Venus, the brightest star in the sky after the Sun and the Moon, is described in astrology as a captivating, radiant, alluring, and dancing woman the musician of the wine and revelry gathering. Venus, the brightest planet and the one closest to Earth, is commonly known as the Caravan-Breaker or the Shepherd's Star. Although it is considered auspicious, it is called sa’d-ı asgar because it is less auspicious than the planet Mercury. Because of its brightness and the fact that it rises in the southeast, it is also known as the Morning Star; because it appears in the southwest at sunset, it is also known as the Evening Star. According to astrology, it is gentle and mild-mannered; it is the most beautiful of the planets. It represents women and the qualities associated with femininity. It manifests professions related to art and music, and awakens excitement, subtle desires, and sensual feelings. Venus is present wherever there is joy, pleasure, entertainment, and delight. The poetry of Mevlânâ, one of the 13th-century sufi poets, is rooted in religious and sufi beliefs and the quest to reach God and divine love. In Mevlânâ’s work, Zühre is an element of the story of humanity’s ascent along the true path. What the poet seeks to convey is not the creation of the planet or the events it has undergone, but divine love. Many of the qualities Zühre embodies reflect the attributes a person must possess in the journey toward the realm of beauty and love. When describing the love that a person experiences using an abstract language rather than everyday speech, he often draws on wine and wine-related concepts. These concepts serve as metaphors he uses to describe love on the path to reaching God through the spiritual journey (seyr-i sülûk). This article examines selected verses from Rumi’s Masnavi and Dîvân-ı Kebîr in which Zühre is mentioned in the context of wine, the cupbearer, and the story of Hârût and Mârût. In these examples, Venus, while drawing its origins from cosmological beliefs, takes on a mystical character. Venus is a symbol that Mevlânâ uses to express humanity’s turning toward divine love on the path of seeking truth and attaining perfection.
