Abstract

Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi's work, known as the Masnavi, has maintained its relevance from the 13th century to the present day, being read in diverse geographies and translated into numerous languages. This six-volume work, written in Persian by Rumi, has not only been translated but also commented on in languages such as Turkish, Persian, and Arabic for better understanding. In the Masnavi, Rumi uses a style of representation and narrative to better convey divine truths and mysteries. This effort to explain these stories and symbols/metaphors has, over time, given birth to the tradition of Masnavi commentary. Commentaries on the Masnavi, particularly in Turkish, have been written from the 15th to the 21st century. Today, scholars studying the Masnavi are also conducting commentary/interpretations on the Masnavi. This article examines the 20th couplet as part of the second part of these commentary studies. The interpretations of previous commentators are cited and evaluated. It has been observed that these commentators generally offer similar interpretations, but some offer different perspectives. Şam'î, Sarı Abdullah Efendi, and O Mevlevi also offered ishari commentaries on the 20th couplet. Couplets 19-22 share a semantic connection. This connection must be considered when evaluating a couplet within them. Based on our assessment, which takes both this connection and the commentators' interpretations into account, the concept of "greed" lies at the heart of this couplet. As can be understood from couplet 19, ambition is directed towards the divine, based on the symbols of gold and silver. Rumi offers a remedy, a remedy, against the affliction of greed and the divine. The remedy is contentment. Contentment keeps ambition at bay. However, if the disease of greed has infected the heart and the idols of the divine have entered, the remedy that will eradicate it is love.
