Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the effect mothers' self-compassion levels on breastfeeding self-efficacy perceptions. Methods: The research was designed as descriptive and relationship-seeking. The study was carried out at the Gynecology and Pediatrics Hospital of a large city in the Black Sea region of Turkey. 272 mothers with healthy postpartum babies aged 0-6 months were included in the study. Data were collected using the mothers' personal information form, The Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF), and Self Compassion Scale (SCS). Results: Feeling self-sufficient in breastfeeding, having experience in breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, gender of the infant and presence of maternal self-compassion were found to be significant associated risk factors affecting mothers' breastfeeding self-efficacy (p 0.05). Conclusion: As the self-compassion levels of mothers in the postpartum period increase, their breastfeeding self-efficacy is positively affected. Health professionals should support mothers' self-compassion and breastfeeding self-efficacy starting from the pregnancy period.

Özet

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, postpartum dönem annelerin öz şefkat düzeylerinin emzirme öz yeterlilik algılarına etkisini incelemektir. Yöntem: Araştırma tanımlayıcı ve ilişki arayıcı tipte dizayn edilmiştir. Çalışma Türkiye’nin Karadeniz Bölgesi’nde yer alan büyük bir ilin Kadın Doğum ve Çocuk Hastalıkları Hastanesinde gerçekleştirildi. Araştırmaya doğum sonu 0-6 aylık sağlıklı bebeği olan 272 anne dahil edildi. Veriler annelerden kişisel bilgi formu, Emzirme Öz Yeterlilik (BSES-SF) ve Öz Şefkat (SCS) Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Bulgular: Emzirmede kendini yeterli hissetme, emzirmede deneyimine sahip olma, sadece anne sütü ile besleme, bebeğin cinsiyeti ve maternal özşefkatin varlığı annelerin emzirme öz yeterliliklerini etkileyen önemli risk faktörleri olarak bulunmuştur (p 0,05). Sonuç: Postpartum dönemdeki annelerin öz şefkat düzeyleri arttıkça emzirme öz yeterlilikleri olumlu etkilenmektedir. Sağlık profesyonelleri gebelik döneminden itibaren annelerin öz şefkatlerini ve emzirme öz yeterliliklerini desteklemelidirler.
