Abstract

In today's world, where natural resources are dwindling and environmental disasters are occurring, acquiring sustainable consumption awareness has become even more crucial. The family, which forms the core of society, is considered the first social group in which individuals are shaped as consumers. As the seed for sustainable con-sumption awareness, the family plays a crucial role in raising future generations with this awareness. In this respect, the study evaluated sustainable consumption activities within the family and examined the impact of family communication on sustainable consumption behavior. The research employed in-depth interviews, a qualitative data collection method. Findings from the families interviewed indicated that sustainable consumption activities within the family focused on energy and water usage awareness and waste separation, that family communication was intense on this issue, and that family members developed cognitive and emotional attitudes toward brands with sus-tainability activities, but behavioral attitudes did not. It was determined that communi-cation within the family was directed from parents to children, but older children warned their parents about these issues. The primary source of information regarding sustainable consumption activities was familiar environmental discourse and social media content. Recommendations were made to relevant parties in this regard.
