Abstract

This study aims to systematically evaluate the sensitivity, consistency, and effectiveness of digital health applications such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning used in the detection and monitoring of infectious diseases. The study is based on a systematic review methodology. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for peer-reviewed research articles published in English and Turkish between 2016 and 2025. The keywords used in the search included: “infectious diseases,” “machine learning,” “deep learning,” “digital health,” “telehealth,” “detection,” “monitoring,” “artificial intelligence,” “digital health,” “telehealth,” “determine,” and “follow-up.” The literature findings demonstrated that AI and machine learning-based diagnostic systems exhibit significantly higher sensitivity and consistency compared to traditional methods. These systems were found to achieve a relative reduction of up to 30-60% in infection-related in-hospital mortality rates. Furthermore, deep learning models were shown to provide superior speed and accuracy in pathogen detection and medical imaging. In contrast, telehealth applications did not yield consistent results in patient monitoring and medication adherence, with their effectiveness varying depending on the design and context of the application. Next-generation technologies such as IoT, blockchain, and robotics were found to offer a robust infrastructure for proactive pandemic management and early warning systems. Digital health applications continue to play a critical role in combating infectious diseases. AI-based systems, in particular, demonstrate groundbreaking potential in diagnosis and prognosis. However, challenges to the integration of these technologies into global health systems such as cost, data privacy, and standardization as well as the need to validate their effectiveness across different contexts, remain key areas for future research. The adoption of these technologies will be a significant step toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of "ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.
