Abstract

Family planning plays a crucial role in protecting the reproductive health of individuals and couples, as well as in promoting public health. Although the global use of family planning methods has increased, the unmet need for family planning remains high. Cultural norms, religious beliefs, prejudices, and myths shape perceptions and experiences regarding family planning methods and can act as barriers to use. Even today, there are persistent myths suggesting that family planning methods may lead to infertility, increase the risk of cancer, or negatively affect sexual life, which lack scientific basis. Such misconceptions not only negatively affect the use of family planning methods but also reproductive health. In contrast, current studies demonstrates that family planning methods are safe and effective and recommend their use. Factors such as lack of knowledge, misinformation from unreliable sources, inadequate counseling, and misleading content on social media can contribute to the formation of these myths. Therefore, it is essential for nureses to be well-informed about up-to-date, evidence-based approaches to family planning and to raise public awareness. The aim of this review is to identify the most common myths related to family planning methods and to present the facts in light of current studies.
