Abstract

Microaggressions are defined as intentional or unintentional slights, insults or injustices directed toward individuals regarding their cultural characteristics. Furthermore, microaggressions can also occur within psychological counseling settings. The purpose of this study is to investigate microaggressions directed toward clients within psychological counseling. To this end, the phenomenological approach, which is one of the qualitative methods, was adopted. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine psychological counselors. The participants were graduates of Guidance and Psychological Counseling undergraduate programs and had at least one year of experience in psychological counseling. The data were transcribed and analyzed using computer software; Microsoft Word and NVivo 15. As a result of the data analyses seven categories were identified. These categories are named as culturally insensitive treatment considerations or recommendations, denial of discrimination, exoticization and secondary gain, helplessness, minimization of cultural issues, traditional roles and stereotyping, second‐class citizen. Results obtained from this study were discussed in the context of relevant literature. It is hoped that the findings will contribute to the literature.
