Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the experiences of elementary education teachers, pre-service teachers and faculty members towards children's picture books and to compile a list of children's picture books. The study was conducted in the case study model. The study group of the research consists of 772 participants in total, including teachers, pre-service teachers and faculty members of the primary education department. The data of the study were collected with a semi-structured interview form and analyzed with descriptive analysis technique. Participants stated that children's picture books should be part of the school, but they do not read enough children's picture books. Pre-service teachers and newly appointed teachers with 5 years/less seniority use children's picture books more than other teachers. In addition to graduate education, it was found that teachers received various certified trainings on children's literature and participated in symposiums, congresses and reading workshops. Children's picture books are mostly read aloud, interactive reading and silent reading. The lists prepared for children's picture books are useful in terms of time, accessibility, convenience in planning activities and workshops, and keeping track of new books. When selecting children's picture books, teachers first pay attention to the ancillary textual elements and then to the content and educational features. They also pay attention to the price of the book, the publisher, the author, the level of the child, its suitability for cultural and moral values, the fact that it does not contain negative expressions, that it does not contain elements of sexlessness, that it is suitable for achievements and workshops, that it is recommended and that it increases the student's motivation to read. A reading list of 100 children's picture books that are thought to be both a guide and useful for primary education teachers, prospective teachers, researchers and parents has been compiled.
