Abstract

This study aims to investigate the predictive power of university students’ developmental self-theories on their digital addiction levels. The research adopts a correlational design within the framework of quantitative methodology. The independent variable in this study is the students’ theories of mindset, while the dependent variable is their level of digital addiction. The sample of the study consists of 517 university students selected through convenience sampling. Among the participants, 61.9% are female and 38.1% are male. In terms of academic year distribution, 48.7% are first-year students, 46.6% are second-year students, and 4.6% are in their third year. Three data collection instruments were used in the study: the Digital Addiction Scale, the Growth Mindset Scale, and a Personal Information Form. The relationship between the independent and dependent variables was analyzed using Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, while multiple regression analysis was employed to examine the predictive power of the independent variables on the dependent variable. The results revealed a significant negative correlation between students’ scores on the “Striving” and “Belief in Development” sub-dimensions of mindset and their levels of digital addiction. Conversely, a significant positive correlation was found between scores on the “Inertia” and “Immutability Belief” sub-dimensions and digital addiction. Furthermore, students’ developmental self-theories explained 7.9% of the variance in digital addiction. Specifically, fixed mindset beliefs accounted for 4.9% of the variance. Based on these findings, it can be recommended that preventive interventions targeting digital addiction consider the role of students’ developmental self-theories.
