Abstract

The mentoring process is regarded as a unique opportunity that provides pre-service teachers various professional experiences to help shape their career paths. Given that mentor teachers play a catalytic role in turning this opportunity into experiential professional value, this study aims to examine pre-service teachers’ mentoring expectations and the mentoring competency level of mentor teachers. Based on quantitative research method, this study was conducted in accordance with the general survey model that aims to reflect the current state of the population as an objective snapshot. During the determination of the research group, purposive sampling method was used to reach 205 senior-year pre-service teachers enrolled in a teaching practice course. When summarizing the results obtained using the Supervising Teacher Competency Scale from a general perspective, it was concluded that pre-service teachers’ expectations of mentoring practices were higher than the mentoring competency level of the mentor teachers. According to other findings, it was found that the mentoring expectations of pre-service teachers differed significantly by gender and GPA. Finally, mentoring competency level of mentor teachers were found to differ significantly based on the gender, department, school level, mentor teachers’ gender, and adequacy of schools’ physical facilities.
