Abstract
This study examines the novel El Descontento (2023) by the Spanish writer Beatriz Serrano through the concept of the corrosion of character developed by the American sociologist Richard Sennett. The aim of the study is to reveal, through the novel, the effects of the new capitalist work order on the individual’s subjectivity, emotional world, and social relationships. Through the character of Marisa, who works at an advertising agency in Madrid, the novel makes visible phenomena such as alienation, emotional exhaustion, anxiety disorders, and the loss of belonging produced by contemporary working life. The work culture, structured around the constant demands of performance, flexibility, and adaptation, gradually corrodes the bond Marisa maintains with her own sense of self. The study also examines the structure of the advertising sector, which operates through the production of desire and identity, and analyzes how Marisa ultimately becomes both a producer and a consumer of the system itself. Through team-building activities, discourses of corporate belonging, the performative identity of the employee, and digital mechanisms of escape, the novel demonstrates how new capitalism also invades the private sphere of the individual. In this respect, El Descontento can be interpreted as a powerful novel of social criticism that exposes the psychological and emotional destruction caused by working life within the contemporary capitalist system.
Özet
Bu çalışmada İspanyol yazar Beatriz Serrano’nun 2023 yılında yayımlanan El Descontento adlı romanı, Amerikalı sosyolog Richard Sennett’in karakter aşınması kavramı çerçevesinde incelenmiştir.
