Umberto Eco and Roland Barthes, one of the most important thinkers of XX. century and the most important figure semiotics, whose thoughts on the interpretation of texts have influenced many people. One of these people is, the most important names in Italian lterature of XX. century, Italo Calvino. Barthes relegates the author of the text in a secondary position and places the reader at the center. The importance that both Barthes and Eco attribute to the reader has a significant influence on Calvino’s thought. However, while this emphasis on the reader opens the text to the possibility of infinite interpretation, Eco draws a limit to the interpretation by emphasizing that textual interpretations should be compatible with other parts of the text, whereas Barthes thinks that there is no limit to interpretation. Calvino, on the other hand, is closer to Barthes in this regard and emphasizes the infinite nature of interpretation in his novel Bir Kış Gecesi Eğer Bir Yolcu, stating that there are as mant interpretation as there are readers. XX. yüzyılın en önemli düşünürlerinden ve göstergebilimin en önemli temsilcilerinden Umberto Eco ve Roland Barthes’ın metinlerin yorumlanması üzerine dair düşünceleri birçok kişiyi etkilemiştir. Bu kişilerden biri, XX. yüzyıl İtalyan edebiyatındaki en önemli isimlerinden biri olan Italo Calvino’dur. Barthes, metnin yazarını ikincil bir konuma yerleştirerek okuru merkeze alır. Hem Barthes’ın hem de Eco’nun okura önem atfetmesi Calvino’nun düşüncelerinde etkili olur.
