Abstract
Today, countries are struggling with factors such as financial crises and global conflicts and these events increase country risk. Credit default swaps, or CDS, are seen as a means of tracking the risks emerging in the markets and are monitored by all international and national direct and indirect investors. The fact that CDS premiums are monitored by peer and rival countries raises the question of whether these premiums move in tandem, and this study examines the co- movement of CDS premiums for the G-5 countries (the US, the UK, Germany, France, and Japan). The study found that risk perception in CDS markets is shaped more by multi-country combinations and common global shocks than by individual country dynamics; that US and Japanese CDSs play a leading role, especially in periods of high risk; and that German and UK CDSs play a strong accompanying and spreading role in this risk transmission mechanism. Another important finding is that while French CDSs are highly integrated into this structure, they do not play as central a role as German and UK CDSs.
