Abstract
Disruptions in GNSS signal integrity significantly and adversely affect positioning accuracy, especially in coastal navigation and restricted waters. Today, alongside modern bridge designs, the maritime industry has become highly dependent on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to ensure navigational safety. However, increasing incidents of signal jamming and spoofing, along with technical failures, expose the vulnerabilities of these systems and pose severe safety risks, particularly in coastal navigation and restricted waters. Furthermore, the reduced number of personnel on modern commercial vessels makes it difficult to effectively apply labor-intensive traditional navigation methods in emergency situations where GNSS data is lost. A review of the current literature reveals that studies on GNSS-independent alternative positioning systems predominantly focus on autonomous marine vehicles. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the need for a GNSS-independent positioning system that automates traditional bearing methods via optical sensors for non-autonomous vessels operating with reduced crews. The proposed system aims to determine the ship's position by automating the traditional visual bearing method using camera-based optical systems. Within the scope of the research, interviews were conducted with 15 ocean-going masters and maritime pilots. The findings revealed that 12 out of the 15 participants had previously encountered GNSS-related disruptions, confirming the critical need for an alternative system. Ultimately, this study envisions utilizing such technology as a decision-support tool to enhance the situational awareness of bridge officers.
