Abstract

This study was carried out using 39 Turkish Saanen goats reared at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Technological and Agricultural Research Center (TETAM) Goat Husbandry Unit. In the study, the distance between the sit bones of the goats was measured within the first three days after they were born and birth observations were made during the birth period. There was no statistical difference between the observations during parturition and the distance between the sit bones. In the study, the effects of birth observations on the mode of delivery (standing/lying), position of arrival (normal/reversed), the need for birth intervention (unassisted/assisted), the live birth or stillbirth and the duration of labor were investigated. The effect of the distance between the sit bones on the mode of delivery, position of presentation, the need for birth intervention and the fate of the offspring was not found to be statistically significant; however, a statistically significant negative correlation was found between the distance between the sit bones and the duration of labor. Accordingly, the correlation coefficient (r) was found to be -0.4887 (p<0.005). The increase in this distance decreases the duration of labor. Further studies are needed to be conducted with more animals in different periods and to investigate the effects of prolonged parturition time on kid survival and vigor.
