Abstract

Plastic pollution has become one of the most significant environmental problems of today. Microplastics are microscopic plastic particles formed as a result of the fragmentation of plastic waste over time. In this study, microplastic pollution was investigated using water samples collected from public charity fountains located in the city center of Çanakkale. The presence of microplastics was analyzed in water samples taken from a total of 20 different locations. In addition, certain water quality parameters (temperature, pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen) were measured to provide supporting data on environmental conditions in the assessment of microplastic pollution. A total of 158 microplastic particles identified within the scope of the study were classified according to their color, shape, and size. The chemical structure of the microplastics was confirmed by FT-IR analysis. The results revealed the presence of microplastics predominantly in fiber form in fountain waters. This study contributes to the evaluation of microplastic pollution at the local scale and provides data for water management practices.
