Abstract

This study explores the views of pre-service mathematics teachers regarding inclusive education, focusing on how the theoretical and practical courses they received during their undergraduate studies are reflected in classroom practices and the experiences they gained during their teaching practicum. Inclusive education is a holistic approach that aims to create equitable learning environments based on human rights by recognizing and addressing student diversity. Developing pre-service teachers’ knowledge and skills related to inclusion during their initial training is therefore essential. This research was designed as a descriptive case study, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews, document analysis, and researcher diaries. The participants consisted of ten pre-service mathematics teachers who completed their practicum in classrooms that included students with special needs. The findings were grouped into three main themes: teaching practicum, inclusive education and students with special needs, and the evaluation of undergraduate education in terms of inclusion. Results showed that participants had limited knowledge of inclusive education, faced challenges in implementation, and did not take sufficient responsibility for instructional adaptations. Moreover, the inclusive practices observed in schools were inadequate. The findings suggest that pre-service teachers should be introduced to inclusive education earlier in their training and be systematically supported throughout the practicum process. The study concludes with recommendations to enhance both the theoretical and practical components of teacher education programs to better prepare candidates for inclusive classrooms.

Özet

Bu çalışma, matematik öğretmeni adaylarının kapsayıcı eğitime ilişkin görüşlerini, lisans eğitimleri süresince aldıkları teorik ve uygulamalı derslerin sınıf içi kapsayıcı uygulamalara nasıl yansıdığını ve öğretmenlik uygulaması sürecinde edindikleri deneyimleri incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Kapsayıcı eğitim, tüm öğrencilerin bireysel farklılıklarının dikkate alındığı, insan haklarına dayalı, eşit ve adil öğrenme ortamları oluşturmayı hedefleyen bütüncül bir yaklaşımdır. Bu bağlamda, öğretmen adaylarının kapsayıcı eğitime yönelik bilgi ve becerilerinin hizmet öncesi dönemde geliştirilmesi büyük önem taşımaktadır. Araştırma, betimleyici durum çalışması deseninde yürütülmüş; veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler, doküman incelemeleri ve araştırmacı günlüğü aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Katılımcılar, öğretmenlik uygulamasını sürdüren ve uygulama sınıfında özel gereksinimli öğrenci bulunan on matematik öğretmeni adayıdır.
