Abstract

Today, many different approaches are used in the field of education to develop individuals' 21st century skills. One of the most widely used approaches is the STEM education approach. The aim of this research is to examine the effects of STEM activities carried out in out-of-school learning environments on the 21st century skills of high school students. The research was conducted in accordance with the single-group pre-test-post-test quasi-experimental design, which is a quantitative research design. The trainings within the scope of the research were carried out at the Istanbul STEM Education Center. The participants of the study consisted of a total of 67 10th and 11th grade students studying at Anatolian High School and Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. The selection of participants was made according to the simple random sampling method. The Multidimensional 21st Century Skills Scale, which consists of 5 dimensions: Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Information and Technology Literacy Skills, Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills, Social Responsibility and Leadership Skills, and Career Awareness, developed by Çevik and Şentürk (2019), was used in the research. The obtained data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test after performing a normality test. The effect size, r (effect value), was calculated. As a result of the analyses, it was determined that STEM activities conducted in out-of-school environments were effective in developing students' 21st-century skills, and that students' 21st-century skills differed significantly as a result of the STEM activities. It was also concluded that out-of-school STEM activities were particularly effective in developing students' entrepreneurship and innovation skills, as well as information and technology literacy skills. The study found that there were significant differences in the 21st-century skills of male and female students in terms of gender, and of Anatolian High School and Vocational and Technical High School students in terms of school type, before and after the training. Based on the findings, it is recommended that out-of-school STEM activities be expanded to develop high school students' 21st-century skills.
