Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine fifth-grade students’ fraction number sense performance levels in the context of various variables and to explain how high-performing students use number sense strategies. This mixed-methods study involved 141 students from a state middle school in Kütahya Province, and seven were selected for further interviews using criterion sampling. Data were obtained through a Fraction Number Sense Test, interviews, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, ANOVA, and content analysis. The results showed that the students’ fraction number sense performance was low and did not differ significantly by gender. On the other hand, students who had received preschool education and had high Turkish and mathematics report card grades had high fraction number sense performance levels. The fraction number sense performance levels of students whose mothers were university graduates and whose fathers were high school or university graduates were higher than those of students whose parents had lower education levels. In addition, the students gave correct answers by locating the given fractions on the number line in questions about understanding the magnitude of numbers; by drawing models and relating the fraction to the unit fraction in questions about understanding and using equivalent representations; by considering the fractions in the context of unit fractions in questions about understanding the effects of operations; by interpreting the fractions based on meaning and predicting the result in flexible calculation questions; and by relating the fractions to halves, quarters, or whole numbers in questions about using reference points.
