Abstract

Established as an independent province during the reign of Emperor Gordian III (238-244), Isauria was later restructured under Diocletian's (284-305) administrative reforms and redefined as a militarized frontier province. This new provincial status came under the authority of governors from the equestrian order, who were vested with both civil and military powers. Although records indicate that over twenty governors served in Isauria during Late Antiquity, it is likely that not all appointments have yet been identified or documented. In many cases, information regarding the early careers of these governors remains either scarce or entirely absent. Nevertheless, existing evidence suggests that the majority of them came from military backgrounds and were appointed to Isauria after holding various positions within the Roman army. Moreover, a key criterion for governorship appears to have been both elevated social status and proximity to the imperial court. Notably, five known governors bore the name Flavius, a designation associated with aristocratic rank and imperial favour since the time of Constantine (307-337). While the post-Isaurian trajectories of many governors cannot be determined with certainty, a considerable number seem to have advanced to higher offices. This study examines the professional backgrounds of the governors of the Province of Isauria in light of ancient literary sources and Late Roman Greek and Latin inscriptions, and evaluates the importance of the governorship of the Province of Isauria during this period.
