Abstract

The tourism sector holds a significant place in the economic development strategies of countries due to its increasing importance in the global economy, the employment opportunities it creates, and the foreign exchange earnings it provides. In this context, measuring tourism competitiveness and evaluating the positions of countries in the international tourism market are of great importance for policymakers. The aim of this study is to analyze Azerbaijan's current position in terms of international tourism competitiveness within the framework of the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) and the former Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) data. The findings reveal that Azerbaijan's tourism competitiveness performance has followed a fluctuating course over the years but has shown a gradual improvement trend recently. Furthermore, the study shows that the country exhibits relative advantages in the areas of price competitiveness, land and port infrastructure, and the socio-economic impact of travel and tourism. On the other hand, improvements are needed in the areas of natural resources, non-recreational resources, openness in travel and tourism, air transport infrastructure, and environmental sustainability. In this context, the study contributes to identifying the strengths and areas for improvement in the sector by revealing the current state of Azerbaijan's international tourism competitiveness. The findings are expected to contribute to the academic literature and support the development of more effective and sustainable tourism policies.
