Abstract

The main objective of this study is to reveal the perception of ecotourism among hotel managers operating in the Çamlıhemşin district of Rize province. The study aims to determine which of the previously identified criteria for ecotourism are most important in order of priority within the context of rural tourism. The study scope consists of hotel businesses located in the district that can be associated with ecotourism activities. In this context, a survey was conducted with 16 hotel managers, and the data obtained were analyzed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The criteria used in the study were adapted from previously validated academic research. According to the analysis results, the most important criterion in the hotel managers' perception of ecotourism is natural life. This is followed by price, tourism facilities, infrastructure, cultural structure, and security, respectively. Geographical features, climate, and transportation were found to have relatively lower importance levels. These results show that ecotourism in Çamlıhemşin has a nature-based structure, but economic factors and facility infrastructure also play a decisive role in decision-making processes. In this context, the research presents findings that can guide both local governments and hotel businesses in evaluating the ecotourism potential and developing sustainable tourism policies. Based on these findings, it is recommended that holistic policies prioritizing the protection of natural life, improving infrastructure and facility quality, and involving the local population be developed in order to sustainably develop ecotourism in Çamlıhemşin.
