Abstract

This study examines the themes around which digital audience discourse is constructed in comments posted on YouTube episode videos of *MasterChef Türkiye 2026*. The accessible top-level comments on 30-episode videos published between May and July 2026 were included in the study. A total of 1,174 raw records were reviewed according to predetermined data-cleaning criteria. After duplicate comments and entries consisting solely of emojis or timestamps were removed, a final dataset of 1,161 comments was obtained. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis, while the distribution of themes was supported by frequency and percentage values. The most prevalent theme was contestant support and parasocial closeness (27.7%). This was followed by criticism of emotional narratives and sensationalism (14.4%), perceptions of fairness (13.9%), the judges’ communication style (11.7%), and gastronomic technical knowledge (10.8%). Overall, 61.2% of the comments displayed a negative or critical orientation. Although comments focusing directly on food and plate presentation remained limited, gastronomic knowledge served as an important reference point for evaluating the judges’ decisions and contestants’ competence. The findings demonstrate that food-competition viewership is shaped at the intersection of gastronomic evaluation, emotional attachment, expectations of fairness, and platform experience. The comment section also functions as a participatory space in which viewers provide direct feedback on editing, video flow, and production choices. In conclusion, the study reveals that food-competition viewership is shaped less by gastronomic evaluations than by emotional attributes, perceptions of fairness, and criticism of the programme.
