Abstract

This article examines how the official Instagram account @GoTürkiye constructs Turkish national identity through visual and multimodal communication. Drawing on quantitative content analysis of 595 posts published in 2025 and qualitative semiotic analysis of a purposively selected sample of 20 posts, the study asks what visual and semiotic strategies dominate the account's content and how these strategies produce meaning regarding national identity. Three overarching visual strategies emerge from the analysis: the management of viewer perspective and distance, the systematic exclusion of social complexity, and the multimodal coordination of image, text, and sound. Seven recurrent mythological narratives are identified, through which Türkiye is rendered as a condensed universe of tourist desire. Drawing on Barthes's concept of myth, Kress and van Leeuwen's visual semiotics, and critical nation branding theory, the study argues that @GoTürkiye produces a platform-native version of Turkishness, shaped as much by Instagram's algorithmic and aesthetic conventions as by state communicative intent. The findings contribute to the integration of visual semiotics, critical nation branding theory, and platform studies in the analysis of official tourism communication.
