Abstract

Red currant (Ribes rubrum L.) seeds are recognized as a rich botanical source known for the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties of their phenolic compounds and flavonoids. This study was conducted to evaluate the bioactive compound profile of the methanol extract of Ribes rubrum seeds and its potential applications in cosmetic and health products. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed significant amounts of ascorbic acid, gallic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, rutin, ferulic acid, naringin, o-coumaric acid, resveratrol, quercetin, and trans-cinnamic acid. The extract's rich phenolic content demonstrates its potential as a natural antioxidant source that supports free radical scavenging and ultraviolet (UV) protection. Furthermore, the flavonoids and polyphenols identified in the extract exhibit bioactivities that may contribute to skin health, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and photoprotective effects. These multifunctional properties highlight the importance of including R. rubrum seed extract in topical applications. Beyond cosmetic applications, the bioactive compounds identified in the methanol extract offer potential benefits in functional health products. When applied as nutraceuticals or dietary supplements, phenolic acids and flavonoids can modulate immune responses, reduce oxidative stress, and provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Such functional properties align with the growing interest in natural plant-derived components that combine safety with bioactivity in health-promoting formulations. Consequently, the methanol extract of R. rubrum seeds is a promising natural bioactive compound source with multifunctional properties suitable for developing cosmetic and health products. Further studies, including in vitro and in vivo evaluations, are recommended to confirm its efficacy, safety, and stability for industrial applications.
